Hymns Wall Art

I love old hymns and used a few phrases to create pictures for our walls. I started with a bulk pack of 11×14″ canvases and turned them into reminders of my favorite hymns.

I painted several layers of chalk paint onto my canvases then let them dry. My base coat is the color Relic, but they have a lot of colors to choose from.

While they were drying, I purchased downloadable sheet music, and printed those. I used my pdf program to print them poster style, so one page was bigger, and printed on two sheets. I trimmed the sheets down and taped them together to look like one, bigger sheet of music. Onto each sheet, I sprayed a light coat of Mod Podge Spray Acrylic to help them stay dry and flat during the next steps. (Ask my WHY I know that paper can wrinkle with this project… Also – be sure you do this step outside. I sprayed into a box, and still had overspray.)

Once the paper was dry, I applied a thin layer of Mod Podge Matte Waterbase Sealer to the canvas, then centered the music print-out onto the canvas. I followed this with another thin layer of Mod Podge Matte to glue down the corners and seal the top of the music.

Once dry, I still saw a few wrinkles, but I’m okay with that. To me, it gives texture and makes it look a little more real.

Another tool I’m SO thankful for is my Cricut cutting machine. I use it ALL THE TIME. I found several images online that I used for inspiration in creating these wording layouts in Cricut. I used the fonts that ‘go’ our church ‘look’. But I definitely give credit for this whole idea to the internet. 😉

After cutting out the permanent vinyl and weeding it, I centered it over the canvas, then applied several more thin layers of Mod Podge Matte to keep it all together. Every time I pass one of these canvases, the tunes and the promise pop into my head and encourage me.
