Painting Mrs. Potts Apron, Pt. 2

Continuation of Part 1
After receiving feedback from MelRae and the director, I moved on to starting the actual apron! They wanted three different colored roses in a similar color palette. I chose to go with pink, purple, and reddish purple as my final color scheme. We wanted the apron to look like a teapot with roses and leaves, so I kept the teapot near me.

Beginning Painting

I ended up free-handing the sketch because I was familiar with roses at this point. I angled an OttLite ClearSun LED lamp onto the sketch to replicate the outdoor lighting and shadows of a rose. The light allowed me to highlight key points to give the roses as much definition as possible. We wanted the roses to pop on stage, so I made the roses and leaves big and exaggerated.

Because it is a costume and will receive a lot of wear and tear (singing, dancing, sweating under stage lights, normal rubbing/bumping on stage), it needs to be easily washable. To achieve this, I mixed a textile medium into the paint. The textile medium mixed with the paint allows the paint to be washed and flexible so it doesn’t crack or get ruined. To paint the roses I laid down my shadows and highlights and blended using my favorite method, my fingers! I find blending with my fingers almost gives it an airbrushed look and is the easiest method for me.

I painted the edges of the flowers with white to help them pop and clean up the edges. Because the audience is so far away from the costumes we do our best to make as much detail pop as we can. Adding bling really elevate costumes and brings another layer of dimension, texture and shine. The bling catches the stage lights and really pops onstage. Oops! That discussion will be continued in Part 3!
